49ers Defeat Cowboys 23-17 to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive
Cowboys Season Ends Overtime Thriller
The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 23-17 on Sunday afternoon to advance to the NFC Divisional Playoffs. Robbie Gould kicked a game-winning 24-yard field goal in overtime to give the 49ers the victory. With the win, the 49ers improved to 10-7 on the season and clinched a Wild Card playoff berth. The Cowboys finished the season with a 12-5 record but fell short of making the playoffs.
The 49ers got off to a fast start, taking a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on a touchdown pass from Jimmy Garoppolo to George Kittle and a field goal by Gould. The Cowboys responded with a touchdown pass from Dak Prescott to CeeDee Lamb in the second quarter to cut the lead to 10-7. The 49ers extended their lead to 17-7 in the third quarter on a touchdown run by Elijah Mitchell, but the Cowboys answered back with a field goal by Greg Zuerlein to make it 17-10.
The Cowboys tied the game at 17-17 with a touchdown pass from Prescott to Dalton Schultz in the fourth quarter. The 49ers had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Gould missed a 41-yard field goal attempt with just over two minutes remaining. The game went into overtime, and the 49ers won it on Gould's 24-yard field goal.
Garoppolo finished the game 16-of-25 passing for 172 yards and a touchdown. Mitchell led the 49ers' rushing attack with 96 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. Kittle caught five passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. Prescott finished the game 23-of-42 passing for 254 yards and two touchdowns. Lamb led the Cowboys' receiving attack with six catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. Schultz caught seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.
The 49ers will face the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Playoffs next weekend. The Packers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 31-18 on Saturday night.
